About this piece

Umurage is Kinyarwanda for heritage, and here it is what becoming looks like. A young woman's face emerges from darkness with one eye steady on the viewer, while the other side of the canvas dissolves into bloom and a single butterfly. The painting treats transformation as something quiet and entirely certain.
