Painting the city, and the people in it
BJA is a contemporary art studio in Kigali. Much of the work it shows is about what Kigali feels like from the inside: the hush of a figure at dusk, the heat of a market's colour, the double life of a skyline and its reflection.
The pictures are less illustrations of the city than portraits of its moods. They are built in layers, slowly, until the surface holds as much as the subject.
